Tromso is the largest city in northern Norway, on the island of Tromsoya about 350 km north of the Arctic Circle, ringed by fjords and snow-capped mountains. Long called the Gateway to the Arctic, it was the base for polar expeditions by Roald Amundsen and others, remembered in the Polar Museum. The angular Arctic Cathedral and the Fjellheisen cable car stand across the bridge on the mainland side, and Polaria is an Arctic aquarium near the centre.
The city sees the midnight sun in summer and is one of the best places to watch the northern lights in winter. Ships dock at Prostneset in the centre or at Breivika to the north, and Tromso is also a starting point for Arctic expedition cruises.

Tromso's landmark 1965 church of triangular concrete and aluminium panels on the mainland side, with a huge stained-glass east window.

Cable car up Mount Storsteinen to about 420 m, with views over the city, fjords and islands; a classic spot for midnight sun or northern lights.
