About Castro
Castro is a city on Isla Grande de Chiloe in southern Chile, the main transport and tourism hub for the Chiloe Archipelago. The waterfront is known for wooden palafitos stilt houses over the tidal flats, and the town spreads uphill from the harbour toward churches and markets that serve both island residents and visitors.
The setting is cool and maritime. Cruise passengers call here as a port of call on southern Chile itineraries rather than as a major embarkation city. Nearby mainland hubs across the channel are separate destinations.
- Climate
- Isla Grande de Chiloe has an oceanic-leaning, humid, temperate climate: rainfall peaks in winter, and there is no dry summer period. In the intermediate depression that includes Castro, annual precipitation is around 2,000 mm. Cool, wet conditions year-round; waterproof layers are the practical expectation.
