Agios Nikolaos is the stylish capital of Lasithi on Crete's Gulf of Mirabello, built around Lake Voulismeni, a deep circular lagoon linked to the sea by a short channel and ringed by cafes and cliffs. The bay is known for clear water and boat trips, and the town is the base for Elounda and the Venetian fortress island of Spinalonga, a former leper colony.
