About Alor Island
Alor is a small, rugged volcanic island at the eastern end of the Lesser Sunda chain in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, north of Timor. Its main town, Kalabahi, lies at the head of a long, sheltered bay and is the capital of the Alor Regency. About 140,000 people live on the island and speak around 50 languages.
Alor is known as the island of a thousand mokos, small bronze kettledrums still used as heirlooms and bride wealth, displayed at the 1000 Moko Museum in town. In the hills about 13 km east of Kalabahi, the Abui village of Takpala keeps its traditional thatched houses, weaving and lego-lego dance.
The surrounding waters, especially the Pantar Strait, are among Indonesia's best dive areas. Small expedition ships anchor in Kalabahi Bay and tender passengers ashore.
