About Itea

Itea is a quiet town on the northern shore of the Corinthian Gulf, set between the sea and the vast olive groves of Amfissa, with Mount Parnassus and the Giona range behind. In antiquity nearby Kirra was the port of Delphi, and pilgrims climbed from here to consult the oracle of Apollo. Ships berth in Itea harbour, beside the seafront promenade of cafes and fish tavernas. In a day ashore, visitors can drive about 26 minutes up to the sanctuary and museum of Delphi, explore the captains' houses of Galaxidi, or see the Byzantine mosaics of Hosios Loukas.

Things to Do in Itea

Archaeological Site of Delphi

At the foot of Mount Parnassus, between the twin Phaedriades rocks, lies the Panhellenic sanctuary of Apollo, home of the most famous oracle of ancient Greece, where the Pythia delivered the god's answers. The ancients called it the centre of the world. Highlights include the Temple of Apollo, the rebuilt Treasury of the Athenians and the theatre. A combined ticket with the museum costs EUR 20 (reduced EUR 10).

Delphi Archaeological Museum

Next to the archaeological site, the museum tells the story of the Delphic sanctuary and its oracle through some of the most important works of ancient Greek art, from the 2nd millennium BC to late antiquity, when a small Christian community lived at Delphi. The EUR 20 ticket (reduced EUR 10) also covers the archaeological site.

Galaxidi

A historic seafaring town at the head of a rocky cove, Galaxidi has two natural harbours, Agora and Chirolakas, once home to sailors whose Galaxidi ships crossed the Mediterranean. Cobbled lanes run past neoclassical captains' houses with colourful facades, marble door arches and pebble yards. The Tsalangyra Mansion, now the Town Hall, the stone Girls' School and the Bourzeiko Mansion stand out, and the church of Agios Nikolaos, patron saint of sailors, crowns the town. Harbour cafes and tavernas serve fresh fish and ravani, a syrup-soaked semolina cake.

Monastery of Hosios Loukas

Set in a valley of olive trees near Distomo, this UNESCO-listed monastery was founded in the 10th century by the hermit Luke of Steiris. It has two connected churches: the church of the Virgin Mary, from the mid-10th century, with fine brick-and-stone masonry, and the larger early 11th-century main church, lined with coloured marble panels and mosaics on a gold background. Frescoes decorate the crypt below. Ticket EUR 10.
