About Figueira da Foz

Figueira da Foz is a seaside town in central Portugal where the Mondego river meets the Atlantic. Its port handles mostly cargo and fishing boats but also welcomes small cruise ships, which dock at the commercial quay on the river at the edge of the town centre. From there it is a short walk to the riverside Forte de Santa Catarina and the town museum, and the seafront promenade leads past the broad sands of Praia da Claridade to the old fishing village of Buarcos at the north end of the bay.

Climate
Mild, wet winters and warm, dry summers. A little inland, July and August highs average about 28 to 29 C with lows near 16 C; from December to February highs are about 15 to 16 C and lows about 5 to 6.5 C. The coast at Figueira da Foz is usually a little cooler in summer thanks to Atlantic breezes. Rain totals about 880 mm a year, mostly from October to January; July is the driest month.

Things to Do in Figueira da Foz

Praia da Claridade

Stretching west from the mouth of the Mondego, this is the town's main beach, a very wide expanse of pale sand backed by the seafront promenade and the buildings of Avenida 25 de Abril. It faces the open Atlantic, so the surf can be strong; swim only where lifeguards are on duty. Access is free and the promenade has plenty of cafes.

Forte de Santa Catarina

Guarding the mouth of the Mondego since the late 16th century, this small triangular fort holds a chapel to Santa Catarina and a lighthouse. It was briefly taken by Napoleon's troops under Junot before being retaken by the Portuguese. Entry is free.

Museu Municipal Santos Rocha

Founded by the archaeologist Antonio dos Santos Rocha, the town museum covers local archaeology, sacred art, arms, Indo-Portuguese furniture and ethnography from Africa and Asia. Adult entry is EUR 2.

Buarcos

At the northern end of the bay, the old fishing village of Buarcos keeps parts of its sea walls, narrow streets and a sandy beach where colourful boats are pulled up on the sand. Its waterfront is lined with grilled-fish restaurants, and it is reached along the seafront by local bus or taxi.
