About Biak
Biak is the main island of the Schouten group, lying in Cenderawasih Bay off the north coast of Indonesian Papua. It is fringed with coral, and the wider region is rich in birds found nowhere else.
Biak played a major part in the Second World War, and thousands of Japanese soldiers died in the Binsari Cave, now a site with a small war museum and wartime relics.
Visitors also head to the busy local market, a bird and orchid park, and the coral islands offshore for snorkelling and diving. Visiting ships are often welcomed with traditional dance.
