About Newcastle

Newcastle is Australia's second-oldest city, at the mouth of the Hunter River north of Sydney, built around a busy working port and fringed by surf beaches. Its coastline has historic ocean baths, Nobbys Beach and the breakwall to Nobbys Lighthouse, where coal ships and tugs pass close by, and the Bathers Way walk links the city's beaches. The free Newcastle Museum fills the old Honeysuckle railway workshops on the harbour foreshore. Newcastle is also the gateway to the Hunter Valley, one of Australia's leading wine regions, about an hour inland. Cruise ships dock at Channel Berth in Carrington, across the harbour from the city.
