About Cooktown
Cooktown sits on the Endeavour River in Far North Queensland on Cape York Peninsula, about 330 km north of Cairns by road. It is Guugu Yimithirr country (Gungarde) and the place where Lieutenant James Cook beached HMB Endeavour for repairs in 1770 after striking the reef.
The small tropical town retains a gold-rush street grid along Charlotte Street, the James Cook Museum, the hand-painted Milbi Wall at the wharf telling Guugu Yimithirr history, botanic gardens, and panoramic views from Grassy Hill over the river mouth and Coral Sea. Cruise passengers call here for heritage and Indigenous culture ashore rather than a large commercial cruise complex.
