About Burnie

Burnie is a port city on the north-west coast of Tasmania, built around a busy deep-water cargo port and the gateway to the region's coast and wilderness. In town, the Burnie Regional Museum recreates a Federation-era street of shops and workshops, the Makers' Workshop stands on the waterfront, and Fern Glade Reserve on the Emu River is a good place to spot platypus. Cruise ships dock in the working port, about 2 km from the city centre, and on cruise days the council runs free shuttles to its Discovery Hub and to the waterfront. Cradle Mountain, one of Australia's best-known national parks, is a full-day trip inland.
