About Bazaruto Island
Bazaruto Island lies in the Bazaruto Archipelago National Park, a chain of islands about 15 km off the coast of southern Mozambique near Vilankulo and Inhassoro. The park is one of Mozambique's longest-established marine protected areas, covering about 1,430 square km of sea and five islands, and is managed by the national conservation agency ANAC in partnership with African Parks.
Its waters hold an important population of dugongs, along with whale sharks, manta rays, dolphins and nesting sea turtles.
Inland, the islands have high dunes, freshwater lakes and shaded coastal forest, and Bazaruto has palm-shaded white beaches along its sheltered western shore. More than 170 bird species have been recorded across the archipelago. Expedition ships call here for guided nature activities.
- Climate
- Warm to hot, humid coastal climate. The park describes winter (May to August) as warm, with cooler mornings and evenings, and summer (October to March) as hot and humid. Summer is also the cyclone season. This is a general description, so conditions are approximate.
