Where is the Astypalaia cruise port?

Astypalaia has no cruise terminal, and it is not confirmed whether ships come alongside or anchor and use tenders, so check on board. The landing place closest to the village is Pera Gialos, the traditional harbour at the foot of Chora, with a small quay, a marina for sailing boats, a beach and waterfront cafes.

The lanes of Chora, the windmills and the castle are a steep walk uphill from the harbour. Large ferries normally use the newer port of Agios Andreas, about 3 km to the north-west.

Destination

About Astypalaia

Astypalaia is the westernmost island of the Dodecanese, in the south-east Aegean, and is often called a bridge between the Cyclades and the Dodecanese. Its butterfly shape on the map gives it the nickname Butterfly of the Aegean, and a strip of land only about 100 m wide joins its two halves.

The capital, Chora, is a striking hilltop village: white houses with colourful wooden balconies spill down both sides of a ridge crowned by a stone castle, with a row of windmills below. On one side lies Pera Gialos, the old harbour, and on the other Livadi, a green valley with a long beach.

The rest of the island is dry and rugged, with caves, quiet coves and sheltered beaches, and the whole island is protected for its natural beauty.
